I used the free version of SpiderOak for a time and was monumentally unimpressed with it’s backup speed performance. The restore speed was equally unimpressive. I have roughly a 400-500 kilobytes/sec outbound capability (that’s BYTES PER SECOND) and I noted that the backup proceeded at around 50 kilobytes/sec at maximum and often falling to 1/10th that speed. Presumably they were giving me the fastest performance with the goal in mind of securing my purchase of their service so the “slow as molasses” performance was a deal killer for me. I eventually went with Crashplan+ for my offline backup solution. I don’t work for them either.

I have been using Crashplan only for the past two months. During that time some small chunks of data have been restored during that period and it worked just fine. It was very fast as is the backup process. There is definitely NO THROTTLING of bandwidth outbound or inbound. It is a very fair price for the service provided. Hopefully they don’t go down the service feature reduction path like Mozy. As it stands now I can heartily recommend Crashplan as a backup solution.

Very dissapointed i really dont know what to do now every time i connect live drive to upload my files it keeps saying transfer 0 WTF!!! is up with that really pissed of us i have import data for my business dont know how to get my files back really dissapointed live drive customer service horrible if ur plnaing for an online storage dont use them use drop box much better..

Paid for a year, really struggled to get it to work on my computer. Customer service was dire and very very slow. Same as others – auto emails and then a long wait. Gave up after three days of 24hr uploading – was snail pace despite my fast cable connection. Eventually, managed, after a recorded delivery and backup emails to get account closed and hopefully a refund. The features look good, the speed of uploading is very poor and to be viable, this company needs to invest in some sensible customer support.

failed to install properly, and then like others, i discovered that opening a support ticket gets no response at all….. just an auto receive message…. no attempt to discuss, sort out… nothing. waste of money

I signed up for this site after reading your review site and i couldn’t be happier. great product, great price and loads of features. thanks for your brilliant site, it saved me alot of trouble.

The trial period leads you to believe that Carbonite moves along quite nicely, but once you pass about 35 GB, the backup bandwidth allocation slows to 50 kbps which could translate to months for the initial backup for a big drive. I have only 140 GB, no videos, no music, but I do have photos from vacations and of family. I also have some 20 years of files. But 140GB is not big by modern standards. I clocked the rate of file transfer – it was generally at 50 kbps. That is glacially slow, taking weeks to backup my drive. I decided to pay for an upgrade that would allow for 2 mbps – slow, but acceptable. However, nothing speeded up. I contacted support that initially denied that upgrades increased speed so I had to forward them their own posted policy, They apologized and said that all I had to do was re-install the software.

What was amazing to me is that in this competitive market they would throttle bandwidth to ridiculously low levels. What was also amazing, where bad support often sinks internet businesses and good support makes internet businesses billionaires, their support consists of hastily posted packaged responses that show little attention to the messages sent. Re-posts do eventually get a response. Chat was better than e-mail.

For a few hundred dollars, you can by your own NAS backup drive – they’re easy to set up, but you do have to maintain them and if they sit the same house as your desktop, it’s sort of silly. Also, universal access requires portforwarding and keeping purchasing a static IP – in fact, I wound eventually getting my own domain name. It seemed so much easier to just use the cloud and pay for the service.

However, Carbonite isn’t the place to go. They are inexpensive, however, which is their primary appeal, and they do have a good software package. But there is no reason, when the world is skyping and streaming and watching vidoes over the web, to put up with transfer rates that are in the dark ages.

Let the buyer beware, of course – but do look out for bandwidth policies. It hardly matters if a good service is slow. The initial backup should always be speedy and then they can throttle bandwidth – after all, it isn’t fair if someone is backing up multiple terrabytes of video files and wrecking the back up of others – but the initial backup should be done and over with pronto. It will be a month before Carbonite backed up 140 GB. Fortunatley, my NAS system is still in place.

I’m looking for another service. Oh yes, they do not provide any kind of refunds no matter what – that’s okay – airlines and phone companies do the same thing – but they are stooping to the lower standard of customer care.

Actually this is not a limit being imposed by MyPCBackup. We don’t doubt you having problems, and we can see that you are still working with @MyPCBackupHelp on twitter even as of 4 hours ago (looks like they may have helped resolve your issue – we certainly hope so). MyPcBackup has accounts backing up data well in excess of this amount.

I want to reply to this concern, as well as emails that we have received in regards to this claim of a 250GB limit that MyPCBackup supposedly imposes. There is no 250GB limit being imposed by MyPCBackup on their unlimited backup. MyPCBackup has shown us accounts where users are backing up well in excess of this amount of data (600GB+).

We don’t doubt that you are having issues, but might suggest there may be other reasons for the problems. Possibly what may be going on in the above cases, is you are hitting individual ISP upload limits? You may want to check with your ISP provider to verify that they are not imposing a bandwidth cap on you.

I downloaded this onto my and my partner’s computer – it worked ok on mine but hasn’t backed up most of the things on my partner’s computer (despite paying for the additional license), most frustrating about this is the complete lack of support from the website on how to fix this, they send emails suggesting things which I have already tried several times before and every emaill reply is from a different person (no sense of customer support/service). In the last three emails I have sent I asked for the details to make a complaint – this request has been ignored all three times. I have now asked for a full refund for the second license but have no confidence in the company that this will be done. In summary, zip cloud is fine if it works but if it doesn’t you are on your own with no avenues to complain or get your money back.

MyPcBackup definately does have a space limit on what they will allow you to actually backup. I have about 750 GB I want to backup, but their program won’t let me backup more than 250 GB. It then quits and tells me that it is finished. Had I not tried to restore a file that wasn’t backed up, I wouldn’t even have known this. I thought I had a wonderful backup solution until I needed to recover one file. I recovered one of 5 versions and substituted the corrupted file with the recovered version. It was corrupted as well so I wanted to recover the next older file version. But then all versions had been deleted! Support couldn’t help… I just lost 1 year of email So I am now looking for a new service provider that can deliver backup and online access/Android support.

I signed up for 2 years with the unlimited storage option being a big selling feature. Interface seemed easy enough so thus I began my backup in October 2011. I had 475 GB to back up.

The backup was deathly slow thru DSL. At the end of December I was showing only 210 GB had been backed up. That being said, I was looking at another 3 months of 24hr/day continuous backup until it was complete.

However, on Jan 3rd I noticed that it said the backup was complete – all 41K + files and 475GB.

I logged on the mypcbackup.com to check to see that all the files were there. Online, it said only about 30K files were stored for a total of 250GB. I then perused thru my folders and found many of them completely empty with no files at all.

It seemed very odd that the backup stopped online at a nice round 250GB.

I contacted their online support (no phone or email; only web support tickets), and after a few exchanges I finally got this response:

“Due to the total size of the files that you are trying to back you may wish to consider a business solution. Unfortunately we do not offer such a package at this time, so our product may not be suitable for you”

What the $&$%^???

Advertised as “unlimited storage”, and this is the response I get 3 months after the fact and after paying for 2 years of service?

Needless to say, I’m fit to be tied…
How can this company get away with these fraudulent claims???

Very poor service, almost no existing customer support, we are an IT company and we have had no response to 2 tickets for over a week – probablly not suitable if one can not get support…

Switched from years of using Mozy, completely due to cost. So far I have been very impressed with the user interface, I like it better than Mozy. Very easy set up. Speed seems fine. Would highly recommend at this point…

with this company they answer your questions before purchase, BUT THEY LIE:( service is non existent

Only loads half of a folder and does not notify that it has failed, Fails to upload over 4000 files at a time,, they always remain to be uploaded. I have had no support from the email support service in over 4 weeks. Nice idea but very poor customer service. Not recommended.

I love this program already and I’ve only had it a matter of days! Already I’ve contacted the support team and had helpful and fast responses from them, which was something I was worried about when dealing with e-mail support. My favourite thing is probably the auto sync feature which means I can set it to sync my files and never need to do anything else, great for a forgetful person like me

I chose this product simply because of the cheap price – the cheapest I could find in fact! I was glad I did because so far the experience has been awesome, syncing all my stuff quickly and without any limitations. It did take me a while to get used to but now I’m up to speed it’s a very easy system to use. Plus I can view my synced files from anywhere through the internet which is a definite plus for me, means I don’t have to take my laptop everywhere!

This is the first cloud company I’ve ever used, so can’t really compare them to anyone.
So far I love it! I used JustCLoud first to back-up a few picture albums which synced pretty quickly, then went on my mates PC at his house and could see everything in my cloud, as well as add to it when I was in my account. Also I was price hunting for a while and JustCloud was the cheapest I found, as well as promising me unlimited back-ups, which I’ll find out for sure when I put more stuff in my cloud (apparently some companies block the back-ups after a certain limit is reached??) but I was promised Unlimited so this should be what I get.

What does it for me the most though is how simple it all is to use, and according to their blog there’s going to be a drag and drop feature which instantly syncs your files so it’s going to get even better! Like I said I haven’t used any other sites so don’t know if this is better or worse than any others but so far my experience has been perfect with these guys, I wouldn’t look any further!

I thought I loved Carbonite but today I discovered that NONE of my video files have been backed up. It turns out Carbonite does not backup video files unless you manually designate each video file for backup. My video files are extremely valuable to me. I have a lot of them. Many are mixed in with my pictures in my My Pictures folder. The whole My Pictures folder is of course marked to be continuously backed up. But, it turns out none of the videos in My Pictures is backed up. And none of the videos in My Videos is backed up either, even though that folder is also marked for continuous automatic backup. When was I ever notified of this? I have been living in a fool’s paradise, thinking my videos were all safely backed up on Carbonite. They must have changed their policy after I signed up (I signed up years ago). I’m furious. I am cancelling and moving to another service. I’m still doing research, but it looks like CrashPlan is the way to go for me.

I’ve been using SugarSync and sugarsync for about a year now and I’m
really satisfied. Very little system load compared to other similar
products I’ve tried and has never once crashed.

I was ( and currently am ) having tech. difficulty to the point of requesting a refund. – 13+ days and only 25% of my 22 gig backed up.

I was immediately given attention and apologies and in the middle of ‘TEXT’ support – (there IS NO TELEPHONE support), I was dropped. I don’t know what to do. The last e-mail was me saying thank you because the support tech was stumped and he said that he was going to escalate it. Then…Nothing..cricket..cricket…..cricket. It’s eerie – like they’ve closed down?
Written them several times to find out what happened, what the status is, why uploading keeps randomly stopping, why I was told it could take up to a week and it’s been 2 weeks and we’re not even close….cricket….cricket…….
I am likely to cancel and backup my own data like I have for the last 10 years.
