How Long will My Initial Backup Take?

clocks-sm

One of the biggest issues any online backup faces, is the time it takes to complete the initial backup. Realistically backing up gigabytes of data to the cloud can take days if not weeks to complete! The good news though, is once the initial backup is completed, the incremental backups normally only take a few minutes. If you want to calculate how long your initial backup will take, there is an easy way to do it. Follow these two easy steps: Determine what your "upload speed" is by going to speedtest.net. Remember you are looking for the "Upload Speed". Then you can use this nifty site, and just ask WolframAlpha. … [Read more...]

MyPCBackup Offers True Unlimited Backup

MyPCBackup Unlimited Backup

MyPCBackup has eliminated their Home plan and dropped the price on their Unlimited plan from $7.95/month to $4.95/month!Unlike other "unlimited" plans from merchants like Carbonite or IDrive who actually put bandwidth throttling in place to limit the amount of data being uploaded at any given point in time, MyPCBackup does not do any bandwidth throttling. MyPCBackup also does not impose any individual file size limits, unlike BackBlaze and Elephant Drive who both impose file size limitations of 4GB and 2GB respectively. MyPCBackup is one of the very few true "unlimited" backups still out there and still reasonably … [Read more...]

IDrive Unlimited Backup

In a move earlier this month that completely contradicts Mozy's move to discontinue unlimited backups, IDrive announced a new backup plan: IDrive Unlimited. For $49.50/year for 1 Windows computer users can backup as much data as they want. Ironic? Timely? Skilled Marketing? Well, we will let you decide that for yourself! :-) Now there are a few things to be aware of with this plan however. These are: Currently IDrive Unlimited is only available for Windows based systems. Sorry Mac and Linux users! :-( While there are no limits imposed up to 150GB of backup, once you reach the 150 GB threshold they will throttle your bandwidth back … [Read more...]

SugarSync: $14.99/mo 100 GB IDrive: $4.95/mo 150GB SugarSync or IDrive - How Do They Compare? Although SugarSync and IDrive appear to be similar in many ways there are some key differences between them. If you were to strictly take a look at price and a quick look at feature comparison you would think that IDrive is a much better deal, but let's dig a bit deeper and take a closer look. First, IDrive offers two plans for the home market. One that provides 150GB's of storage and is on a per computer pricing model. The other plan is a "family" type plan and provides 500GB's of storage and will actually provide backup for … [Read more...]

Mozy’s New Pricing and No More Unlimited Backup

mozy-no-unlimited-storage-150x150

There has been alot of talk the past few days about Mozy's change in pricing and their move away from unlimited storage to a tiered structure to go along with their new pricing. At first we were shocked by the change, but the more it sank in and we thought about it, the less of a "shock" it really is. Now before you are quick to jump all over us... please read on! We are not completely saying we totally agree with Mozy's approach and timing, just that we are not really all that shocked by it when you take it into perspective. First, lets set the stage. Yes, storage is becoming cheaper every day, but then the demand for that storage is … [Read more...]

My Hard Drive Just Failed – Now What!?

Hard Drive in Flames

We all know that an online backup solution can be extremely effective at restoring that file or picture that we accidently deleted last week when we were doing a bit of "house-cleaning". But what happens if, God forbid, we have a hard drive failure, someone steals our laptop, or some other horrible disaster comes to pass? Well, if you have a few hundred GB's of data it is highly unlikely that you are going to want to even attempt an "online" restore of that amount of data to a new hard drive or system. Just the thought of the time, not to mention the potential frustration involved in that effort, makes me cringe! (shudder) And in … [Read more...]
